Dubai’s image as a sanctuary of stability for global wealth and high-end tourism was shaken after Iranian missiles and drones struck parts of the United Arab Emirates, disrupting five-star resorts and key infrastructure.

The weekend began with the usual displays of affluence along Palm Jumeirah and at the Dubai Mall, even as conflict intensified elsewhere in the region. That sense of insulation faltered shortly after dusk when Iranian projectiles approached Gulf airspace. Air defence systems in the UAE, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain were activated, intercepting many of the incoming threats. Several tourists reported confusion in the absence of air raid sirens, with some initially mistaking explosions for fireworks. At the Fairmont The Palm, a five-star resort, a drone strike ignited a fire near the entrance, prompting emergency responses.

Further disruption followed as debris struck Dubai and Abu Dhabi airports, killing one person and injuring about a dozen others, according to local authorities, with two additional deaths announced the following day. Smoke rose from Jebel Ali port, the Middle East’s busiest maritime hub, where one berth caught fire. The Burj Al Arab, one of the emirate’s most recognisable luxury landmarks, was also hit by falling debris, leading to a brief blaze. It remains unclear whether hotels and commercial landmarks were deliberate targets or incidental casualties in strikes aimed at US military facilities.

By nightfall, luxury hotels were moving guests from exposed rooms and terraces into underground car parks and service corridors. Airports were closed, leaving tens of thousands of visitors stranded. On Sunday morning, authorities urged tourists to remain indoors while reassuring residents that the majority of the 137 missiles and 209 drones fired towards UAE territory had been intercepted.

Officials and local commentators stressed that life and business would continue as normal, pledging flight reimbursements and rapid restoration of services. Yet the episode marked a rare rupture in Dubai’s carefully cultivated reputation as a secure luxury haven, exposing the vulnerability of even the region’s most polished destinations to geopolitical escalation.
